Lesson 1 - Alphabet and Pronunciation

Somish has just 20 letters -- 5 vowels and 15 consonants:

a, b, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, t, v

All letters are always lowercase:

jesa nam se :johan.
My name is Johan.

Notice that names (proper nouns) are preceded with : (a colon).

Each letter has one sound, and each sound has one letter. Spelling is totally regular!

The vowel sounds:

a as in ah
e as in get
i as in machine
o as in oh
u as in rule

The consonants are pronounced pretty much as you would expect. Note, however, that r is trilled with the front of the tongue, and j is like an English y:

jesa [yesa] nam se :johan [yohan].

Words with more than one syllable are stressed on the first:

jesa nam se :johan.
